Right Thinking in a World Gone Wrong
One of the greatest challenges facing Christians today is the powerful influence of secular thinking. From all directions we’re fed a constant barrage of persuasive—yet unbiblical—worldviews. This makes it difficult to know where to stand on today’s most talked-about issues.
The leadership team at Grace Community Church, along with their pastor, John MacArthur, provide much-needed discernment and clarity in the midst of rampant confusion. Using the Bible as the foundation, you’ll learn how to develop a Christian perspective on key issues. Also included is a topical reference guide of Bible verses that address key concerns—a guide that will arm you with right thinking and biblical answers to challenging questions.
Spring '19 J-Term
Required AFLBS textbook for J-Term: Virtue Ethics course, taught by Dr. Nathan Olson.
While there are a number of things that John MacArthur and I disagree on (e.g. Sacramental Theology, Soteriology, Eschatology, etc.), one of the things that he provides in his book Right Thinking in a World Gone Wrong is a helpful framework and launching point for a discussion about the intersection of the Christian life with a number of current and controversial ethical discussions. Throughout this work, the Christian reader will be confronted with a biblical reaction to topics such as God-honoring romance and Christian boundaries, the right to life, gender identity, political interaction, and the problem of suffering. It’s my hope that this book causes you to think critically about these issues and to honestly evaluate what the Bible has to say about them.

Romans (Schreiner)
This substantive evangelical commentary on Romans by a leading biblical scholar is one of the most popular in the award-winning BECNT series and has been praised as a great preaching commentary. This new edition, updated and revised throughout, reflects Thomas Schreiner's mature thinking on various interpretive issues. As with all BECNT volumes, this commentary features the author's detailed interaction with the Greek text, extensive research, thoughtful verse-by-verse exegesis, and a user-friendly design. It admirably achieves the dual aims of the series--academic sophistication with pastoral sensitivity and accessibility--making it a useful tool for pastors, church leaders, students, and teachers.

Is secularism a positive force in the modern world? Or does it lead to fragmentation and disintegration? In Saving Leonardo, best-selling award-winning author Nancy Pearcey (Total Truth, coauthor How Now Shall We Live?) makes a compelling case that secularism is destructive and dehumanizing.
Pearcey depicts the revolutionary thinkers and artists, the ideas and events, leading step by step to the unleashing of secular worldviews that undermine human dignity and liberty. She crafts a fresh approach that exposes the real-world impact of ideas in philosophy, science, art, literature, and film--voices that surround us in the classroom, in the movie theater, and in our living rooms.
A former agnostic, Pearcey offers a persuasive case for historic Christianity as a holistic and humane alternative. She equips readers to counter the life-denying worldviews that are radically restructuring society and pervading our daily lives. Whether you are a devoted Christian, determined secularist, or don't know quite where you stand, reading Saving Leonardo will unsettle established views and topple ideological idols. Includes more than 100 art reproductions and illustrations that bring the book's themes to life.

Your passport to learning how short-term missions can best serve Christ’s kingdom
Short-term mission trips are a great way to impact the kingdom. Yet they can lack effectiveness because of mistakes or naiveté on the part of participants. In this insightful book, David A. Livermore calls us to serve with our eyes open to global and cultural realities so we can become more effective cross-cultural ministers. Winner of an Outreach Resource of the Year Award in global outreach from Outreach magazine, Serving with Eyes Wide Open is a must-have book for anyone doing a short-term mission or service project, whether domestic or overseas. Six Views on Exploring the Worship Spectrum
An exploration of what worship looks like from a biblical standpoint and why the topic of worship can be so contentious among Christians.
Because worship is inherently theological--because it's a manifestation of humanity's response to God's holiness--it's important to take seriously how we worship and the roles it serves in personal displays of adoration and in community with other believers.
Exploring the Worship Spectrum provides an overview, critique, and celebration of six prominent worship styles:
- Formal-Liturgical – represented by Paul Zahl
- Traditional Hymn-Based – represented by Harold Best
- Contemporary Music-Driven – represented by Joe Horness
- Charismatic – represented by Don Williams
- Blended – represented by Robert Webber
- Emerging – represented by Sally Morgenthaler
This unique format allows those with a heart for worship to compare different perspectives and draw their own conclusions on what the Bible teaches. It allows readers to understand the various approaches to worship, carefully evaluate their strengths and weaknesses, and make personal choices without adopting a judgmental spirit.

Small Church Essentials: Field-Tested Principles for Leading a Healthy Congregation of Under 250
Big churches get all the love. Articles, books, conferences—they mostly feature leaders of large congregations. Yet big churches are a small part of the ecclesial landscape. In fact, more than 90 percent of churches have fewer than 200 people. That means small churches play a big part in what God is doing.
Small Church Essentials is for leaders of these smaller congregations. It encourages them to steward their role well, debunking myths about small churches while offering principles for leading a dynamic, healthy small church.
Primary Text for SIT 2019 Session 1 with Karl Vaters: Small and Significant.
Is bigger always better?
It's not often that we hear the virtues of the small. Our culture teaches that bigger is better--and that includes church ministry and preaching, too. But what if rather than swinging for the fences, preachers focused on improving their sermons through small habits, practices, and exercises? What if smaller is better?
In a world where "small" isn't always celebrated, Jonathan T. Pennington provides Small Preaching, a short book of simple tips that can have revolutionary effects over time. Pennington offers preachers 25 words of wisdom that will help shape their preaching for the better.

Law and Gospel Preaching (Rev. Sam Wellumson)
Available in July.
The need for talented, vigorous leaders in the church cannot be overemphasized. Such times demand active service of men and women who are guided by and devoted to Jesus Christ. Spiritual Leadership stands as a proven classic for developing such leadership. J. Oswald Sanders, presents the key principles of leadership in both the temporal and spiritual realms. He illustrates his points with examples from Scripture and biographies of eminent men of God, such as Moses, Nehemiah, the apostle Paul, David Livingstone, Charles Spurgeon, and others. Sanders holds that even natural leadership qualities are God-given, and their true effectiveness can only be reached when they are used to the glory of God. Let this classic be your guide for leadership, and watch how God works through you to do great things for His glory.

Effective teaching is important not only to the Christian faith but to the success and impact of Christian ministry. This book champions the role of teaching as a necessary skill for ministers to develop, equipping them to work effectively for the spiritual growth of young people. Terry Linhart, who has more than twenty-five years of experience training youth workers, brings together expert Christian educators representing a broad array of evangelical institutions and traditions to show how teaching connects to discipleship and the church in current contexts. Designed for the classroom, the book covers a wide range of topics and includes helpful illustrative diagrams, tables, line drawings, and charts.

In a youth culture that forwards concepts to adolescent women of “queen bees” and “princesses,” a systematic approach to examining ministry with teenage girls is important. Ginny Olson leverages extensive experience and current research to demonstrate the issues that today’s teen ladies are facing in our congregations. “We need to dream with our girls, helping them envision identities that are grounded in Scripture and developed in God's love” (29).

In many instances, teenage guys are addressed within today's youth culture as incredibly simplistic. This text acknowledges from a biblical understanding that young men are going through many layers of development: spiritual, cognitive, sexual, emotional, and social. “Helping a boy become a man requires more than just hanging out with him” (28).

This is a book about the preacher’s task and how to perform it written by a fellow practitioner of the craft. What would you say that craft is? What is it that you do for a living, Pastor?
You get paid to tell people what to think.
You tell people what to think while they lie on their death beds. You tell them what to think about God and eternity. You tell jilted wives what to think when their husbands run off. You tell failures what to think about their future. You tell the melancholy what to think about being sad. Folks pile into a building once a week and sit on uncomfortable benches so they can listen to you tell them what to think for 15 minutes. And they put money in a bucket for the privilege.
This is a craft worthy of your best efforts. It is a matter of life and death. It's what you were called and ordained to do.

Law and Gospel Preaching (Rev. Sam Wellumson)
This volume acquaints readers with the historical setting in which Luther composed his catechisms. This carefully crafted survey of the context of medieval instruction and piety brings to life the habits of mind that Luther inherited as a member of the church and a student of theology, as well as the concerns for the spiritual welfare of his people which moved him to prepare a course of instruction for them. The book presents a solid introduction to the history, theology, and significance of Luther's catechisms. Arand explores critical issues on the church's catechetical tradition, the purpose and setting of Luther's Small and Large Catechism, the heart of the Catechism's content, and the ways the Catechism shapes God's people in faith and life.

The Brown-Driver-Briggs Hebrew and English Lexicon
A trio of eminent Old Testament scholars, Francis Brown, R. Driver, and Charles Briggs, spent over twenty years researching, writing, and preparing this lexicon. Since it first appeared in the early part of the twentieth century, BDB has been considered the finest and most comprehensive Hebrew lexicon available to the English-speaking student. Based upon the classic work of Wilhelm Gesenius, the "father of modern. Hebrew lexicography," BDB gives not only dictionary definitions for each word, but relates each word to its Old Testament usage and categorizes its nuances of meaning. BDB's exhaustive coverage of Old Testament Hebrew words, as well as its unparalleled usage of cognate languages and the wealth of background sources consulted and quoted, render BDB and invaluable resource for all students of the Bible.

The Care of Souls: Cultivating a Pastor's Heart
Pastors care for a soul in the way a doctor cares for a body. In a time when many churches have lost sight of the real purpose of the church, The Care of Souls invites a new generation of pastors to form the godly habits and practical wisdom needed to minister to the hearts and souls of those committed to their care.
Harold Senkbeil helps remind pastors of the essential calling of the ministry: preaching and living out the Word of God while orienting others in the same direction. And he offers practical and fruitful advice—born out of his five decades as a pastor—that will benefit both new pastors and those with years in the pulpit.
Drawing on a lifetime of pastoral experience, The Care of Souls is a beautifully written treasury of proven wisdom which pastors will find themselves turning to again and again.

The Cost of Discipleship
What can the call to discipleship, the adherence to the word of Jesus, mean today to the businessman, the soldier, the laborer, or the government worker? What did Jesus mean to say to us? What is his will for us today? Drawing on the Sermon on the Mount, Dietrich Bonhoeffer answers these timeless questions by providing a seminal reading of the dichotomy between "cheap grace" and "costly grace." "Cheap grace," Bonhoeffer wrote, "is the grace we bestow on ourselves...grace without discipleship....Costly grace is the gospel which must be sought again and again, the girl which must be asked for, the door at which a man must know....It is costly because it costs a man his life, and it is grace because it gives a man the only true life."
The Cost of Discipleship is a compelling statement of the demands of sacrifice and ethical consistency from a man whose life and thought were exemplary articulations of a new type of leadership inspired by the Gospel, and imbued with the spirit of Christian humanism and a creative sense of civic duty.

The Council: A Biblical Perspective on Board Governance
What does the Bible say about board governance? This often-asked question has puzzled board members for decades. The Council answers this question by starting with the Scriptures and ending with the Scriptures. Thanks to the deep dive that Hoag, Henson, and Willmer have taken into the Scriptures, the question has now been more fully answered than ever before. That is a strong statement, but I am convinced it is true. The authors take the reader on a journey back through the pages of time, stepping right into the biblical record of four key councils which now stand as enduring examples to us in some cases giving us a model to emulate, and in others offering a lesson in pitfalls to avoid. The second half of the book pulls the biblical texts together into practical, actionable applications to refine our thinking and define our steps.

The measure of the executive, Peter F. Drucker reminds us, is the ability to "get the right things done." This usually involves doing what other people have overlooked as well as avoiding what is unproductive. Intelligence, imagination, and knowledge may all be wasted in an executive job without the acquired habits of mind that mold them into results.
Drucker identifies five practices essential to business effectiveness that can, and must, be learned: Managing time, Choosing what to contribute to the organization, Knowing where and how to mobilize strength for best effect, Setting the right priorities, and Knitting all of them together with effective decision-making. Ranging widely through the annals of business and government, Peter F. Drucker demonstrates the distinctive skill of the executive and offers fresh insights into old and seemingly obvious business situations.
